Founded in 1966, the Institute of Far Eastern Studies of the Russian Academy of Sciences has been renamed the Institute of China and Contemporary Asia of the Russian Academy of Sciences (ICCA RAS) since the 10th of July 2022 and continues to be the flagship of scientific and analytical research of China, as well as Japan, Korean States, Vietnam, other countries of Asia, international associations and unions such as the SCO, BRICS, RIC, APEC, etc.

The Institute’s scholars focus on current trends in the economy, politics, law and international relations of the countries of East and Southeast Asia, including the impact of technological innovation and digitalization on the economy, business, domestic and foreign policy, legislation, law enforcement, energy cooperation, geopolitical initiatives, solation of the global climate change problems, overcoming the consequences of the pandemic in the region and the impact of Western sanctions on the development of Russia's international relations with the countries of the region under study.
Researchers of the Institute on the basis of the scientific heritage of the Institute are engaged in specialized education and training of specialists in the fields of politics, economics, social problems, history, culture and philosophy of the countries of East and Southeast Asia. ICCA RAS provides up-to-date analytics and scientific expertise for government bodies of the Russian Federation, large domestic and foreign corporations, actively cooperates with scientific institutions in Asia, Europe and America.
Researchers of the Institute of China and Contemporary Asia of the Russian Academy of Sciences organize and conduct academic conferences bringing together scientists from different countries. A number of conferences have a long tradition and have been held at the Institute every year for decades, such as the conference «Modern Problems of the Korean Peninsula», which in 2022 was held for the 26th time.
